Equipped with the unparalleled attention to detail and comprehensive

emphasis on research and experiential learning that characterises all

Anatomy of Movement® trainings, Wellco Yoga Anatomy courses provide a thorough, structured and analysis-based insight into yoga anatomy— empowering teachers to lead exceptional classes that are sustainable and precision-led.

An intensive workshop that combines key elements of our training program for a condensed learning experience

40 Hours

Pranayama, Pelvis & Bandhas

The Anatomy of Movement® school, organises specialised trainings for a vast range of movement professionals year-round and is now making the method's in-depth teachings for yoga available in a condensed, English language format (taught with Spanish option). Facilitated by  senior teachers of the method trained by Blandine Calais-Germain herself, this course will impart analysis-based knowledge for yoga teachers and enthusiasts who are ready to take their practice to the next level.

PRESENTATION:

Wellco Yoga Intensive for Pranayama, Pelvis and Bandhas presents a 40 hours learning curriculum that addresses the anatomy of the respiratory gesture, the structures of  the perineum, and the movements that connect these two areas of the body with particular focus on the practice of Bandhas. We will understand the mechanisms, as well as the dynamics that engage different parts of the body during the study of postures and transitions in real Yoga practice.

PROGRAM:
THE BREATHING GESTURE
Anatomy of respiratory structures
- The inhaler muscles. Presentation and function of the diaphragm and the main inspiratory thoracic muscles.
- Muscles of exhalation. The abdominals and their visceral function.
- Bulbar or cortical breathing.
- Introduction to respiratory volumes.

During the analysis of the positions, the following points will be examined:
- Observation of the breathing gesture during a few breathing cycles of Pranayama:
* Full lung restraints - or empty.
* Bhastrika thoracic, abdominal Bhastrika, Kapalabhati.
* Identify the protagonists in different volumes.
* Identify the active or passive moments during these breaths of Pranayama.

THE PERINEUM
- Anatomy times to observe and know the perineum: the pelvis, its joints, the deep and superficial muscles, the viscera of the lower pelvis.
- Asana practices allowing progressively discovering notions of analysis.
- Pedagogy times, modify or adjust the postures to protect the muscles of the perineum from too many pressures, or contractions.

During the analysis of the asanas the following points will be examined:
- Does the posture stretch part or all of the muscles of the perineum?
- Is it interesting to stretch these muscles? For what reasons?
- Does the position strengthen an area of the perineum in particular?
- Are there pressures towards the muscles of the perineum? To what purpose?
- Does this posture decrease the pressure towards the perineum? To what purpose?
- Is a particular breathing gesture needed in this posture? What are the repercussions for the structures and actions of the perineum?

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
- General presentation of the nervous system and its anatomical classification in various sub-systems.
- The central nervous system.
- The peripheral nervous system.
- The autonomous system with its sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
- The spinal cord.
- The spinal nerves (particularly the sciatic nerve and the brachial plexus).

During the analysis of the positions, the following points will be examined:
- Main groups of positions in direct relation with the movement of the spine.
- Postures in flexion, sciatic nerve and femoral nerve.
- Postures in inclinations, foramens of conjunction, nerves.
- Postures in extension: sympathetic system plexus.
- Postures in torsion: sympathetic ganglia chains.

BANDHAS
- Asvini bandha,
Locate and mobilise the external sphincter of the anus.

- Mulabandha
Mobilise the superficial musculature of the perineum to locate and tonify the tendinous center of the pelvic floor.

- Jalandhara bandha
The larynx: open or closed position of the glottis.
Relationship with the position of the head and neck.
Upper respiratory tract: pharyngeal-buccal-nasal.
Jalandhara without or with a glottis lock.

- Uddiyana bandha
Relationship between the abdominal box and the thoracic box.
Serous membranes.
Straight lumbar spine and abdominal behavior
Ribs opening and abdominal behavior.

During the analysis of bandhas practice, the following points will be examined:
- Are inhalation or exhalation passive or active?
- What do the pereneum muscles do? Are they active or passive?
- What are the main actors of the movements of the abdominal cavity? And the thoracic cavity?
- What kind of breathing gestures are made with each bandha, Before the bandha? During the bandha?

METHODOLOGY:
The working method created by Blandine Calais-Germain (Montessori alumni) is multi-sensorial and has been experimented and taught in the Anatomy of movement® school for already forty years. A lot of importance is given to the practice, and each course builds a pedagogy that is specific to each theme explored.

Participants are guided in a path to assimilate anatomy contents in a multi-sensorial and fun way with body routines and exercises. During the workshop the anatomy textual references are explored through practical exercises of recognition with anatomical models, selective coloring, palpation of anatomical references, drawings, observation of anatomical illustrations or illustrations of the corresponding movements.

The study of the contents is based on numerous experiences in relation to the analysis of some yoga postures. In the Wellco Yoga Anatomy® training program, the practical experiences are also designed for didactical purpose, specific goals, and focused on the actual application of anatomy during a yoga class.
Taking into account the summary aspect of the program, some postures and transitions will be used to introduce information of a more universal nature about the anatomy, the analysis of the movements, and the personalised adaptations of other asanas.

This course is based on the following books from Blandine Calais-Germain:
'Anatomy for movement, Introduction to the analysis of body techniques - Volume 1'
'Anatomy for Yoga, Muscles and yoga'
In case of owning one or the other, it is advised, although it is not essential, to bring them to the course. Some copies of these and other Blandine Calais-Germain books will be available for sale during the course (only at Sala Wellco).
